A glorious day of golf, food, fun and fundraising!

Sunday 25th June saw the Mowsbury Golf Clubs 'Captains Day' event, to raise money for Mind BLMK in Bedford.

With hundreds of people, dozens of rounds of golf, platters of sausage rolls and sandwiches, cakes galore, a beer tent and homemade pizzas from an over on site, the day was a fantastic event. The sun came out, the rain held off (mostly) and the presentations at the end of the day showed just how busy it was (this was 8pm, when many people had been there since 6 that morning!).

Where golf trolleys come to rest...

The day started early (really early) with getting everything set up. Mind BLMK were there with the almost legendary gazebo, alongside the food tent (with a glorious spread provided by the members of the club and a kind donation from Tesco), the drinks tent (supported by The Brewhouse and Kitchen in Bedford) and a shiny red horsebox with a pizza oven in it! Some golfers started the day with a swift brandy (warms you up and for some, improves their game, apparently!) and on the stroke of 8am, the members rounds teed off.

With prizes offered for closest to the pin, longest drive and lowest scores the competition was hot. With fines for missing the greens, hitting the bunkers and others, people were trying very hard but despite this, only 4 people hit the ninth green (where we were set up) all morning. This meant that by the end of the day, over £160 in fines alone was donated to Mind BLMK.

On Captains Day, a Captain managing the drinks and fines!

The morning rounds finished for lunch, with both the members and those coming for the afternoon sharing a buffet that would put the WI to shame, freshly baked pizzas and a cake selection (including a gin and tonic cake that one Mind BLMK staff member described as 'moistly lovely gorgeousness') that was awe inspiring.

Despite the amount of food and drink, the afternoon competition, the 'Texas Scramble' started promptly at 2pm, with 23 teams taking part. Despite a brief shower, the weather held nicely, staying warm and perfect for golf. With the rounds all starting at the same time on different holes, it meant that people got to take another 'drinks and snacks' break when they arrived at the 9th - this was a great chance for us to talk to people about Mind BLMK, what we do and some great conversations happened.

At 7pm, the Captains Drive took place, with the Mens, Ladies and Junior Captains all taking one shot - earlier in the day, people had a chance to chose a square where they thought the balls would land with the winner taking a prize. All three did really well, hitting straight and true shots despite being put off with water quirts and general rowdiness....

The raffle, presentations and thank yous

The day rounded off in the bar, where the raffle was drawn, prizes awarded and thanks you offered. Some fantastic performances, many, many people to thank and a surprisingly quick change for many, from golf wear into the club blazers and ties.

Thanks to everyone who took part, bought tickets for the afternoon session, donated, bought raffle tickets, paid fines (!) and got involved so fully during the day. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Mind BLMK would like to thank everyone who was involved in making the day such a success. Far too many to mention, but special thanks go to Mick and Helen, the Club Captains, for choosing Mind BLMK to be the Mowsbury Charity of the Year, for pulling the day together so brilliantly and for the support they offer us.
