What is RED January?

This January, challenge yourself to get active every day, your way.

Whether you run, swim, cycle or choose your favourite fitness activity, set your goal and enjoy support from the RED community every step, splash and pedal of the way.

Kick-start your 2020 in the most positive way and raise funds for Mind so together we can be active for better mental health.

What physical activities can I do as part of RED January?

The choice is yours! You could pick something you love to do and challenge yourself to do it more often or for longer. Or pick something you have never tried and challenge yourself to stick to it for 31 days.

In 2019, the majority of the RED community did one of the following activities – running, walking, gym sessions, yoga, Pilates, cycling or swimming. We also had REDers who danced, played team sports or did a different activity every day.

How can physical activity help support your mental health?

RED January is founded on research that physical activity can have a positive impact on your mental health.

82% of REDers reported feeling significantly better physically and mentally after completing RED January 2019 according to the post-RED survey.

More information about the importance of physical activity to mental health can be found on Mind’s website.

Why January?

RED January can provide you with a goal and focus to help you through a characteristically tough month, by challenging yourself to get active every day, your way.

Typically, we can be cash poor in January; RED January is free and all-inclusive.

RED January can empower, educate and support you to start the year as you mean to go on, forming healthy habits to continue throughout January and beyond.

Do I need to log my activity to show I am taking part in RED January?

No you don’t need to officially log your daily activity with RED January. Many people use our RED January calendar to help track their own activities, which is available here.

You can also choose to share your daily activity with the RED online community via RED January Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

What if exercising every day seems too daunting?

Whether you’re planning on swimming lengths every morning, walking 10 minutes a day, attending your favourite fitness class or running 100 miles in the month, set your own goal that works for you and listen to your body.

Everyone is different. We’ll be here to support you with handy tips and advice.

Are there any risks associated with exercising every day?

In most circumstances, exercising is beneficial for your mental and physical health and can be helpful as part of a long-term recovery or treatment plan. But there are some situations where you might need to take extra care in case it starts to become a problem for you.

It’s important to be aware that you could be at risk of over-exercising. RED January encourages setting realistic goals, tailored to YOU. We are all unique and our approach to exercise should be as well. The general advice is that exercise should be around 30 minutes per day, no more than 45 minutes.

We also encourage REDers to mix up their routine with yoga and stretching, doing low impact sports where possible and rest when needed.

Find more information about exercising safely on Mind’s website.

Where does RED January take place?

At a location that suits you. Whether you’re exercising solo, with friends, family, colleagues, or even your pet dog, you decide where and when is best for you to enjoy your daily activity

You can also feel supported in the knowledge that you will be part of a growing community of REDers around the country that will be out and about getting active at the same time as you.

How do I register?

To register, go to this page and click on register now. Registration for RED January is free, ensuring the RED experience is as inclusive as possible.

When is the deadline for RED January 2020?

We recommend registering early to give you plenty of time to plan your activity and think about whether you want to fundraise as part of your January challenge.

The sooner you register, the sooner you can benefit from access to RED materials like t-shirts and sports snoods (which are provided on a first come, first served basis) and get support from the RED social media communities.

Registration will remain open until the end of January.

I am under 16 – can I still take part in RED January?

Yes – taking part in healthy physical activity when young is a great way to form good habits for the future. These habits will help you stay well and support your physical and mental wellbeing.

If you are under 16, please check with your parent or guardian to get their permission to take part.

What will you do with any personal information I give you?

We will look after any personal information you share with us. This is central to our values as an organisation. We want everyone who supports us, or who comes to us for support, to feel confident about how any personal information they share will be looked after or used.

Please read our Privacy Policy for full details on how we process, store and use personal data.

How do I get a RED t-shirt or sports snood?

We are excited to share RED’s exclusive RED January 2020 technical t-shirts and sports snoods (including some very special touches).

As the t-shirts and sports snoods do come at a significant cost to Mind BLMK, there is a charge of £10 for t-shirts and £5 for sports snoods to help cover these costs and to ensure funds raised from those taking part in RED January are used to support better mental health.

When you register, there will be an option to purchase a t-shirt – a range of sizes in male and female fits is available – and/or a sports snood. All t-shirts and sports snoods are available on a first come, first served basis.

I did not purchase a RED t-shirt or sports snood when I registered and I now would like to buy one. Can I still buy a t-shirt or sports snood?

Yes! We can offer each REDer the opportunity to buy one t-shirt and one sports snood, so if you did not purchase one when you registered, all you need to do is re-visit the registration page and log in with the information you used to register. You can then access the t-shirt/ sports snood purchase page.

As t-shirts are available on a first come, first served basis, we would recommend that you buy a t-shirt and/or a sports snood as soon as possible if you would like one.

If you have set up a JustGiving or Virgin Money Giving page for RED without registering on the website, you will need to complete the full registration in order to purchase your RED t-shirt and/or sports snood.

What sizes are the t-shirts available in?

T-shirts are available in male sizes from S through to XXL; female sizes from S to XL. A size chart is available when you purchase a t-shirt via the registration page.

How long will it take for my RED t-shirt or sports snood to arrive?

Please allow 7 working days from the date you registered for a member of your RED January team to get in touch to arrange payment. At this point, they will be able to advise when you can expect your RED t-shirt/sports snood to arrive. Please remember if you register between 23 December and 2 January, it will take longer for your t-shirt/ sports snood to arrive as Royal Mail deliveries are reduced over the Christmas and New Year period.

How long will RED t-shirts and sports snoods be available for – can I buy one in January or afterwards?

T-shirts and sports snoods are provided on a first come, first served basis and will remain on sale until they have run out.

Will I be sent a welcome pack in the post?

Ahead of RED January 2019, we know you loved the excited feeling of receiving your bright red parcels and goodies. This year we have reviewed our materials to make sure we are reducing our use of paper and plastic across the board; and to ensure our focus is on as much money raised by the RED community going directly towards continuing Mind’s life-saving work.

We have sourced materials that reduce our environmental impact and unless you have ordered a RED t-shirt or sports snood, all other materials will be available to download here.

I want to fundraise when I take part in RED January – what do I need to do next?

Fantastic!

When registering for RED January 2020 there will be an option to set up your fundraising page and we recommend doing this straight away to help you get started with your fundraising.

If you have already registered you can still set up a JustGiving page here and click ‘start fundraising’ and you’ll be able to set up a page linked to our RED January campaign.

Once your page is set up, our friends at JustGiving recommend that you add a photo and the story of why you are taking part in RED January as this has been shown to help boost your fundraising.

Share your page with all your family, friends and on your social networks to make sure everyone can see and support your incredible RED journey.

There is no individual fundraising target for RED January – we encourage you to raise whatever you feel comfortable with. Every pound REDers raise is hugely important in continuing Mind BLMK’s vital work.

After January, is that it for RED?

We know that those of us who experience low moods, difficult life circumstances and more severe mental health conditions are not restricted to feeling the symptoms for one month of the year.

As a REDer, January is just the beginning. RED January has had life-changing effects on the lives of many people who continue their newly found (or rekindled) relationship with physical activity well into the future.

The RED community and Mind BLMK are here all year round. Feel free to remain part of the community, share stories and offer and receive support after your RED January experience. The RED community will be with you every step, splash and pedal of the way.

Can you tell me more about the partnership between RED January and Mind?

RED January is proud to be continuing its exclusive charity partnership with Mind BLMK. Many taking part in RED January choose to fundraise for Mind BLMK, supporting the vital work that we do for mental health.

I need support with my mental health / the mental health of a loved one – how can you help?

Mind BLMK works across our communities to support positive mental health and wellbeing. Working closely with a range of partners, we offer a number of activities from our wellbeing centres and local venues to make a difference to the mental health and wellbeing of people in Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes, and our aim is to make sure that no-one has to face a mental health problem alone.

If you would like to refer yourself to one of our services, please use the yellow button at the top of any page on our website marked ‘Get Support.’
