#WearitBlue this Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 takes place from 13 to 19 May, and the theme this year is ‘Movement: Moving more for our mental health’.

Physical activity and exercise can have a positive impact on our mental health, in lots of different ways. But for some of us, getting active can be a struggle – including those of us who live with mental health problems.

How can physical activity improve my mental health?

Physical activity has lots of benefits for our mental and physical wellbeing. It can help with things like:

  • Managing stress
  • Improving sleep
  • Improving your mood
  • Improving confidence
  • Connecting with nature
  • Socialising and meeting new people
  • Managing symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Memory and brain functioning
  • Heart, muscle and bone health
  • Reducing the risk of developing some long-term health conditions, such as heart disease
