Today brings us National Smile Month. Yes, we all Today brings us National Smile Month.
Yes, we all strive for the perfect set of gnashers, but have you ever noticed that when you smile (and we mean a real one, not just posed for the camera), how much better it makes you feel. It’s virtually impossible not to feel a sense of warmth and wellbeing when you return one, but it’s also an avenue to show our emotion and express happiness. 😁

Have you ever wondered though how we smile sometimes without realising it? Well, the scientific secret behind the act of smiling lies beneath our brains. We are wired to produce and release chemicals that encourage our brain to transmit signals to our facial muscles, which then triggers the act of smiling. As our facial muscles contract to create a smile, it fires back another set of signals to our brain. This signal is responsible for forming a reward system and further stimulates our happy hormones. The happy hormones, also known as endorphins, increase its level and builds a pathway to improve your mood. Really cool eh!

So, this month, whether it’s a small grin, or a full-on beam showing that gorgeous smile, we want you all to indulge in radiating the good vibes.

With loneliness being the theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, it was also particularly poignant to hear from some of our courageous service users, who were brave enough to stand up and share their personal story with us, the challenges faced, and how with support, have managed to achieve a much healthier & balanced mental wellness.

Feeling lonely can be very stressful and can have Feeling lonely can be very stressful and can have a big impact on your general wellbeing, which might make it even harder to make positive steps to feeling better.

Think about how some of the following are affecting how you feel and whether you can do anything to change them:

One common description of loneliness is the feelin One common description of loneliness is the feeling we get when our need for rewarding social contact and relationships is not met. But loneliness is not always the same as being alone.

You may choose to be alone and live happily without much contact with other people, while others may find this a lonely experience.

Our society is changing fast. The recent pandemic Our society is changing fast. The recent pandemic has given rise to a sense of loneliness and isolation undermining confidence in daily routines. In recent times, many of us have had far less access to loved ones. Tech is enabling healthcare professionals to see more patients without the need to travel, but on the flip side of the coin, convenience and cost efficiencies are driving more and more activities online.

Our workplaces are also changing. With many adapting to home and hybrid working, we need to embrace this change while building and maintaining meaningful connections with our colleagues.

During this Mental Health Awareness, let’s all lift someone out of loneliness. A call to a work colleague, old friend, your neighbour down the road could just have a huge impact.

Feeling lonely is something that can happen to anyone at any point and can leave us feeling isolated, introverted and with low self-esteem. If you are struggling, you should not blame yourself and it’s important to remember that these feelings can pass.

#IveBeenThere #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MHAW #loneliness #liftsomeoneoutofloneliness #MHAW2022
One in four adults feel lonely some or all of the One in four adults feel lonely some or all of the time. There’s no single cause and there’s no one solution. After all, we’re all different! But the longer we feel lonely, the more we are at risk of mental health problems. Some people are also at higher risk of feeling lonely than others.

This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, why not connect with someone you think might be feeling lonely. A chat can make all the difference.

We may find it easier to support someone else impacted by loneliness, but it can be much harder to admit to ourselves that we feel lonely. There are lots of simple actions that you can do to help others who may be feeling lonely, and you might find that reaching out to someone else could help you to feel less lonely too.

No one chooses to be lonely. Isolation and loneliness are two separate things. You don’t have to be isolated to be lonely, just as you don’t have to be lonely to be isolated. Loneliness is not a lack of people in your life – it’s a lack of connection with people. You can be in a room full of people, and still feel alone. But if you’re in a room full of people that you feel a connection with, you’re not lonely.

In Bedfordshire, Luton & Milton Keynes there are some fantastic organisations who can offer free confidential help and support.

Loneliness is affecting more and more of us in the Loneliness is affecting more and more of us in the UK and has had a huge impact on our physical and mental health during the last couple of years.

Stats show that working-age adults living alone are more prone to reporting feeling isolated and lonely. Similarly, for those in “bad” or very “bad” health, in rented accommodation, or who are single, divorced or separated from a former civil partner.

How often have you walked into a bar and find a group of young people sat together but all on their phones. According to recent figures, around a quarter or young people say they “often” feel they lack companionship (25%), 25% say they often feel left out and 27% feel isolated from others.

Both those feeling lonely “often or always” had lower personal well-being, including higher anxiety, than the Great Britain average, but the effect was stronger among those feeling lonely “often or always.”

These are worrying stats, and we must find better ways of tackling the epidemic of loneliness. Our connection to other people and our community is fundamental to protecting our mental health.

Everyone experiences feelings of loneliness in different ways which means that there are different ways of tackling the issue. We may find it easier to support someone else impacted by loneliness, but it can be much harder to admit that we feel lonely.
